The Vitamin A and ¥â-carotene contents of Mothers and New Born Infants in the Sera

Abstract
The vitamin A and ¥â-carotene contents in the sera of prenatal mothers and new born infants were determined by the Bessey¢¥s method. The sera were taken from the blood vessels of 50 Korean normal prenatal mothers of 22-36 years of age and from placental cords of 50 new born infants as soon as they were delivered.
The results observed are as follows:
1. (a) The mean value of vitamin A contents in the sera of prenatal mothers is 29.0§¶% and standard deviation 8.09§¶%, while the mean velue of new born infants is 16.0§¶% and standard deviation 5.07§¶%.
(b) The mean value of ¥â-carotene contents in the sera of prenatal mothers is 77.0§¶% and standard deviation 15.5§¶%, while the mean value of new born infants is 35.0§¶% and standard deviation 9.03§¶%.
2. The vitamin A centents in the sera of Korean prenatal mothers are lower than those of U.S.A. and Japan. but no difference of the ¥â-carotene contents of prenatal mothers was found between Korea and U.S.A. and Japan.
3. Vitamin A should be supplied adequately to the renatal mother for the normal growth and development of the feetuses.
